Google has announced that they have hired one of the founding fathers of the Internet, Vinton "Vint" Cerf to start on October 3, 2005. Vint co-designed the TCP/IP protocols that were used to develop the Internet's
underlying architecture and his addition brings yet another brillant and creative mind to the Google brain-trust.
What role will Vint fill? He was named Chief Internet Evangelist. N0w that is an interesting title. Call me naive but I just have never heard of a Chief Internet Evangelist before. Of course, I have heard of evangelism before and usually I relate it to preaching the Christian Gospel but I do not think Google is interested in getting into religion? Unless Google have it's own Google Gospel that they need preached?
The definition of an evangelist according to wikipedia is as follows:
"The word evangelist comes from the Kine Greek word S's ("EU-Angelo's"), meaning bringer of good news."
So in Google's case I could see why they would need an Chief Internet Evangelist since they so often have good news to bring. Undoubtedly they were in need of a messenger and that is what they are hoping they found in Vint Cerf.
Congratulations Vint, and good luck on bringing us future good news about Google. Check out Vint's wikipedia page for biography details. Also, Google has a new press release about the hiring here. Finally, be sure to check out Google's blog post by Vint himself. The man wastes little time spreading the good news.
