ZoomTags is a new way to implement a commercial tag cloud with revenue potential on a website or blog. This new type of commercial tag cloud offers keywords from a tag cloud up for sale. Michael Arrington profiles ZoomTags on TechCrunch and brings up a wonderful point in saying:
"Nothing, of course, stops Yahoo and Google from implementing a similar interface if this proves to be a better way for some sites to serve ads."
Michael compares ZoomTags to another similar offering called 1000Tags. I agree, it will be interesting to see if Microsoft, Google, or Yahoo take what 1000Tags and ZoomTag have done and run with it.

Although there are similarities, mainly that both sites combine tags and ads, I don't think 1000Tags and ZoomTags are that similar. 1000Tags is a one shot thing: one page full of tag-ads.
ZoomTags on the contrary, is more of a pay-per-click advertising network. It really is what others have been doing for years, except that the syndicated ads take the form of a tag cloud.

Great point, thanks for bringing the distinguishing factors to light between ZoomTags and 1000Tags. I appreciate your comments.

Frank, I don't think 1000Tags will fly. It reminds me of all of the Million Dollar Homepage clones. A page of just advertising won't work. See the discussion I've been having with http://www.mymotech.com/?p=43 about these tags. ZoomTags, however, appears to have a chance. I think they'd do better if they offered fixed prices, at least initially, rather than trying to build yet another PPC advertising platform.

Richard,
Please read the last entry in our blog http://zoomtags.zoomblog.com/
It talks about adding fixed price.

We have come up with a "focussed" page: The Web2.0 Million Dollar Homepage, at http://www.web20milliondollarhomepage.com
We envisage a page where each click opens a pleasant Web2.0 Surprise!
Do have a look, and let us know what you think!

if you think that 1000tags or zoomtags is an interesting concept, have you looked at www.tagterms.com yet? the world's first tag based search engine/directory
launched after 1000tags but before zoomtags, tagterms puts a whole new twist on the idea of using tag clouds as a UI to present data to the end user.
check out the FAQ (http://www.tagterms.com/faq.html) for details
