Technorati recently made several design changes which included repositioning certain elements of the site. For example, the "Explore the Blogosphere" area has changed and added sharper edged boxes. Aesthetic changes aside, Technorati is now tracking the popularity of videos from YouTube, a popular online video service. Not to mention, Steve Rubel recently pointed out that MySpace is now being tracked by Technorati.

This is a great step forward for Technorati. Some people seem to be concerned about Technorati getting littered with MySpace content, but anyone who knows how to use Technorati's authority filter wouldn't share this concern. If they blogger cranks out great stuff and happens to do it on a MySpace blog, they shouldn't be penalized for their platform choice.

I agree with the choice to track MySpace -- platform shouldn't be a penalty -- but I'm of the opinion they should filter the YouTube pages into a different engine altogether. Calling YouTube a "blog" drastically broadens the concept of what a blog is, and while vlogs are perfectly legitimate, I somehow doubt that a "Lazy Sunday" spoof qualifies as a true blog entry -- and I say this as the producer of a web series.
On the other hand, I could be wrong, and a "blog" could qualify as any form of self-expression, regardless of format. But by that definition, nearly anything ever uploaded without benefit of a paycheck must qualify as someone's form of self-expression, so why isn't Technorati also indexing PureVolume and DeviantArt accounts?
Or did I just give them an idea?
