BeFunky, a startup which was founded as a spin off of the more manually artist driven IamCartoon project, offers a few fun little applications to allow users to easily create and customize photos as cartoons and create personal avatars. BeFunky recently showed its stuff at TechCrunch40.
With BeFunky's Cartoonizer users can simply upload a photo and then augment it to their liking as it quickly transforms into a cartoon-like image. I recently upload my photo and turned it into a cartoon as shown to the right. BeFunky even recently demonstrated the cartoonizing process applied to video which appeared similar to the pop-art look of rotoscoping used in the film A Scanner Darkly (see video trailer below) and Waking Life (shown in the video trailer below). Though I signed up for a BeFunky beta account it does not appear the video Cartoonizer is yet available but I look forward to when it is.
Additionally, BeFunky allows users to create personalized avatars or "uvatars" which reminded me of the more realistic representation of the WeeMee which have been around forever.
