Google announced today that they will be looking to get into trying to save the planet by announcing a new strategic initiative to develop electricity from renewable energy sources that will be cheaper than electricity produced from coal. I happy to see Google is taking such a stance and it makes me wonder what will Google do next. In the last week alone Google has announced they are making broadband switches, going to be offering a TV-related product soon, releasing a mobile phone platform soon and a Google Magazine was even spotted in print in China among other products and endeavors. It is a pretty amazing to think that a single text box search engine could come to create such a diverse list of products.
Larry Page, Google Co-founder and President of Products had this to say regarding the the innovation used to cool Google's data centers:
"We want to apply the same creativity and innovation to the challenge of generating renewable electricity at globally significant scale, and produce it cheaper than from coal."
Google.org is going to help fund the research as they look for clean energy to help cut down the number of greenhouse gases produced by coal. That is great news! Thank you Google.
I recall awhile back expressing how Google's diversification was rather frightening to me. At the time I was concerned that Google was getting into too many different things and they were ignoring issues being raised by their customers. With the long awaited GDrive online storage product said to be about ready to release which could mean that Google could own even more of your data and files. It makes me own wonder if Google's made their 'clean energy' announcement as a positive diversion? Or is Google truly not evil after all?
