There are a number of desktop tools for designers and artists but it seems an online version of those tools is something that is lacking. From a photo editing perspective picnik and Adobe Photoshop Express offer easy to use tools for editing images. But they are fairly simple tools and do not offer vector image creation or editing. Aviary is looking to change this by offering a number of tools for the creative to do everything including image editing, typography, music and video. Aviary is a website for artists of all genres to create, edit and share their works directly in their favorite browser. This collaboration is something that similar desktop applications do not offer.
Aviary was created by the Long Island, New York based Worth 1000 team with the following mission:
To enable rich content creation and distribution.
The 18 tools (all with bird names) which are part of the Aviary suite offer different types of image editors (including pattern editing, 3D modeling, and vector editing). The tools are layer-based like Adobe Photoshop. Aviary's various tools all communicate with each other making it possible to leverage multiple tools at once for a single project. Aside for the tools, Aviary will also be launching an API in the near future, which will enable third party developers to build additional applications on the framework.
Aviary recently did a review of the photo editing landscape and included this image (below) which was created with the toolset.
I am excited about the release of Aviary as it will enable creative people to do some amazing things with photos, video and music online. If you are interested in signing up the private beta head over to the Aviary site and sign up today - and tell them Frank sent you.
