Wolfram Alpha Co-Founder Interview

Last week I traveled to the Midwest to Champaign, Illinois to speak to a group of entrepreneurs about building brands and social media as covered by the Champaign News Gazette and to host another TECH cocktail. The event was sponsored by Wolfram Research which is based in Champaign and has been creating products like Mathematica for over 20 years.

Wolfram Research recently received quite a bit of buzz on TechCrunch, GigaOm Network, ReadWriteWeb and Mashable among others for the launch of the consumer facing product called Wolfram Alpha. Wolfram Alpha is a the computational research engine that helps to find anwsers to questions that don't exist on the Web.

I got a chance to visit with Co-founder, scientist and author, Theodore Gray and discussed the lastest from Wolfram Research. He was a joy to talk to as his office was filled with a number unique items which all had an interesting scientific story behind them. Theodore also created periodictable.com and authored the book Mad Science - Experiments You Can Do At Home But Probably Shouldn't. Check out the video interview with Theodore Gray (above). NYC Breakfast: Social Web Tech Discussions

I was in the Big Apple today so I decided to do a little breakfast meetup/tweetup event this morning. The event was open to anyone and we had a handful of folks brave the blizzard-like snow storm this morning to meetup. Aside from Comfort Diner in Chelsea having some very sturdy coffee mugs and solid waffles, bacon and eggs the breakfast discussions were very thoughtful and interesting.

The breakfast was made up of the following @innonate, @ceonyc, @noreaster, @msg, Ian Costello and myself (@somewhatfrank) and we did a couple of live streamed videos (via Flixwagon) about lifestreaming, backup, chat and other products and services. My CES 2009 Experience Recap

Last week, I previewed my trip to the Consumer Electronics Show as I had just touched down and was getting ready to experience my first CES. Well, I am back from CES and to be totally frank, all I can say is "Wow, that was a good time!" Unfortunately, it took me until today to decompress and get enough sleep to be able to spill details about all that I experienced last week at CES. First things first, a big thank you Intel for sponsoring my trip out to CES as an Intel Insider. It was an unbelievable experience.

So how did the party I co-hosted at CES on Thursday night go? I would have to say it was a success but you can see for yourself by checking out some of the photos taken by Brian Solis (this set of photos & photo below)

We had the entire Sportsbook Bar & Grill at the Palazzo which was formerly the 40/40 Club owned by hip hop star Jay Z, so as you can imagine we felt like kings in the palace of a hip hop legend. It was pretty amazing and the attendees were top-notch. I never thought as a corn-fed Northern Illinois sixth grader attending a junior high sock hop wearing what I equated to MC Hammer "hammer pants" (which are rather baggy pants) that I would years later host a CES kickoff party in Vegas that MC Hammer would attend. I guess you just don't think about stuff like that as a 6th grader growing up in a small town. Oh and we both wore regular pants to the event.

Setting Up Roku for On-Demand Netflix To Your TV

For a holiday gift this year, I gave out a couple of Roku gift packages which included the Roku Netflix Player. The Roku Netflix Player enables a Netflix user with unlimited videos (currently $8.99 a month subscription) to watch videos on-demand to the TV. Users can choose from the selection of over 12,000 videos that currently are released to watch instantly on the Web. Roku even has new firmware to handle HD videos. To help with the adoption of the new gadget I decided to set it up and documented it in episode 60 on SOMEWHAT FRANK (wow-wooh-eee, can you believe I did 61 SOMEWHAT FRANK video adventure episodes this year!?!). A SOMEWHAT (Bearded) FRANK Christmas 2008

With temperatures going below zero the past week in Chicago I decided to start growing a beard to stay warm as I traveled from the Nation's Capital to the Midwest to visit family for the holidays. I spent Christmas with my family in the snowy Chicagoland. Now everyone celebrates Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus differently so I just wanted to share a few videos from my holiday experience. Sharing is caring.

Social Media & My Somewhat Obsession With The Shiny Objects of the Web @ SIPA in Las Vegas

Yesterday I kicked off the Specialized Information Publishers Association (SIPA) in Vegas conference with a keynote discussing social media and my somewhat obsession with the shiny new objects of the Web. I shared my thoughts, antidotes and social media stories in hopes to help both explain and motivate the crowd into taking action. I also mentioned a number of products that I like to use and refer to as "shiny objects of the Web."

After barely sleeping at all last night due to the Vegas oxygen rich air and just sheer excitement about the speaking event I was pretty pumped up and tried to wake up the crowd with a number of little ditties including singing Wheels on the Bus go round and round, sharing some fun stories and having everyone scream OPRAH at the top of their lungs! It was a BLAST! Below is some instant feedback I got via Twitter from one of the attendees.

Carpooling, sharing a shower or buying a hybrid are all causes that could help stop climate change. We Add Up is a company looking to help draw attention to ways to help stop climate change by creating products (mainly tee shirts) tied to a pledge to take action. Each person that makes a pledge for a particular cause is assigned a unique number and it is printed on your tee shirt, tote or other product. The number represents the number of people currently supporting a cause. I reviewed We Add Up previously back in May 2008 but I recently got a chance to talk with We Add Up Co-founder Jill Palermo (of the mother daughter duo) in episode 59 on SOMEWHAT FRANK. I Am Somewhat Inspired: What Inspires You?

Innovation starts with education and I believe in lifetime learning. I starting writing SOMEWHAT FRANK due to my curiosity and interest in learning more about blogging. Now I am inspired by personal technology. I like to figure things out and that helps to keep me constantly learning new things. Intel recently created, Inspired By Education, a site dedicated to helping to highlight the importance of education and lifetime learning. Eco-Friendly Tech at the Green Festival in DC

The Green Festival came to Washington, D.C. this past weekend and I decided to check it out in search of innovative new eco-friendly personal technology gadgets and gizmos. There were a number of products and services at the event and I decided to capture a few of them thanks to Flixwagon and I have posted them in this article. GeoEye, is a satellite imagery company that has been in the news quite a bit lately, as they launched GeoEye-1 on September 6, 2008 via a rocket into space. GeoEye-1 is the first commercial satellite offering high resolution imagery. GeoEye-1 is also the exclusive provider of imagery for Google Earth and Google Maps.

I recently got a chance to visit the GeoEye headquarters in Dulles/Sterling, Virginia to speak with Mark Brender, VP of Communications and Marketing at GeoEye. He showed me around the office as we discussed their recent successes and future objectives. Yesterday, I was in New York City and got a chance to meet up with Meghan Asha, one of the co-founders of NonSociety, a new online media play that lifestreams niche verticals (fashion, style and tech). NonSociety is a group venture with Julia Allison and Kate Rambin.

We took a walk in the park and got to chatting about startups, technology, electric cars, pets and even encountered a rather distracting making out session. Check out video episode 46 on SOMEWHAT FRANK with Meghan Asha (below).

At TechCrunch50 Searching For Adventures

I am currently at TechCrunch50 sitting in the second row behind the panel judges which has included the likes of Marisa Mayer, Chad Hurley, Marc Andreesen, Yossi Vardi and Ron Conway among others.  It has been a rather busy day I am taking photos and tweeting out every so often.

I am on the lookout for some awesome new products, gadgets and such to showcase in a video episode of SOMEWHAT FRANK which covers adventures in a personal technology lifestyle.

Video: BrickFair LEGO Fest 2008

LEGOs could be considered the building the blocks of your childhood war chest, as the tiny pronged bricks offer the ability to create just about anything you put you mind to.  I have not played with LEGOs in years but age is no barrier as both kids and adults alike can share a creative moment with LEGOs. I recently attended the 2008 DC BrickFair LEGO Fest to see some of the creative innovations being constructed with LEGOs. Also it is worth noting the event offers up a charity contribution to the SladeChild Foundation.

This weekend edition and episode 41 of SOMEWHAT FRANK TV, explores the LEGO Universe at the DC BrickFair LEGO Fest. Check out BrickFair video below as I chat with Todd Webb who organized the event for the first time. LEGO fans of all ages share their creations, films and knowledge with the rest of LEGO Land.
